Vallourec’s Sponsorship Drives Grampian Transport Museum Young Engineers to National Success
With the generous sponsorship of Vallourec and Vallourec® New Energies, two of their electric cars, Merlin and Bullet, have qualified for the national final at the prestigious Goodwood Racetrack, set to take place in October.
This success story began on Saturday, 15th June, when the Grampian Transport Museum (GTM) Young Engineers participated in the qualification heat for the Greenpower Formula 24 Challenge.
The event, which took place on a quarter-mile oval track at the Grampian Transport Museum, featured 16 cars from local schools competing in two 90-minute races. The GTM’s Merlin stood out by covering the longest distance in each race, completing an impressive 128 laps.
The competition’s rules added to the excitement, requiring each team to make two pit stops to swap drivers, ensuring that three drivers per race had their chance behind the wheel. This strategic element was crucial for the GTM team’s success, as they executed efficient and flawless pit stops to maintain their lead.
Behind this triumph are Alexandre Valdelievre and Zak Fleming from Vallourec Oil & Gas UK, whose support and attendance at the event were much appreciated. Their commitment to fostering young talent in engineering reflects Vallourec’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of innovators.
The GTM Young Engineers Club, which meets on Saturday mornings is a beacon of inspiration for 11 to 16-year-olds interested in overcoming engineering challenges. Vallourec’s sponsorship has provided not only financial support but also a vote of confidence in the potential of these young minds.
The club’s activities are deeply rooted in STEM education, providing practical experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These subjects are the foundation of the club’s work, enabling the young engineers to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world challenges and fostering a passion for innovation.
As the GTM Young Engineers prepare for the final challenge at Goodwood in October, they carry with them the hopes and dreams of all who believe in the power of young innovation. The success of Merlin and Bullet is a shining example of what can be achieved when young minds are given the opportunity to innovate and are supported by industry leaders like Vallourec.
Many thanks to Alexandre Valdelievre and Zak Fleming for their generous sponsorship and for believing in the potential of these young engineers. More than ever, Vallourec is proud to participate in this type of event, which combines a spirit of collaboration, innovation and community support. The Group is particularly committed to investing in the potential of the next generation of engineers and in green energy solutions, relying heavily on STEM education.
