Peter Sabatino: innovating through lessons learned
11/10/2019 – Careers
Peter “Pete” Sabatino is motivated to continually reach for better solutions and innovating through learning.
What are your responsibilities?
I am a Methods Specialist and Process Owner for CNC Lathes. That means I create the code to program machines on the floor that make various parts. I also maintain tooling and consumable supplies. I created the "SRX" (Skill Review 10) training program for CNC Lathe Operators, meeting with all operators to teach technical details concerning lathe operation and better product understanding. This effort has now grown to three weekly lessons led by multiple process owners and facility staff, involving lathe operators, utility operators and quality inspection technicians.
What was your path to Vallourec?
Before coming to Vallourec, I was a machinist for a local machine shop. I also worked as a field service technician, repairing mainframe computers and industrial printers; and as a programmer.
I continually undergo specialized training to hone my skills and provide improved frontline support for our team. I have several certificates in programming and machining competencies, and will be a proud graduate of Frontline Foundations in October of this year!
How are you innovating in your job?
Working with the engineering team, we are piloting the use of 3D printing to supplement innovation and the maintenance spare parts catalog. We have multiple individuals trained in the use of our 3D printer, and the ideas are flowing!
What does working at Vallourec offer you?
Vallourec has expanded my scope far beyond Northeast Ohio. Under any other circumstance, I would not be able to be part of a global community of experts with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working. The opportunity to learn is everywhere, in every aspect of the business. The people in our facility drive me to do better through their extensive efforts and ingenuity. The people are primarily what makes this a ‘Great Place to Work.’
Who are you outside of work?
I am a very proud father of a 14-year-old daughter, Harper, who is an amazing artist and golfer, and a 6-year-old son, Calvin, who has the best sense of humor in the world. I am a happy husband who will be married to the perfect woman for 20 years next year. We all enjoy staying in our camper at every opportunity, swimming, fishing and playing with our dog, Harry.
What piece of advice would you give someone starting out in their career?
When you enter a room, never assume you are the smartest. If you do, then you never learn anything. Instead, find the smartest person in the room and learn all you can. Never stop learning!
